ISTDP Treatment with Dr. Steve Arthey

Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast, Australia

In addition to my training, supervision and workshop commitments, I conduct a private practice in Burleigh Heads, a suburb at the southern end of the Gold Coast, QLD, Australia.

I have been practicing psychotherapy as a clinical psychologist for over 25 years, both in private practice and in hospital settings.

For 11 years, I was the senior clinical psychologist at an 80-bed private psychiatric hospital in Melbourne. There, I was the director of psychotherapy programs for the treatment of depression, anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, self-harm and PTSD.

I conduct internationally acccredited training programs in ISTDP for mental health professionals in both Australia and New Zealand, with over 75 mental health professionals having completed a "core training" program in ISTDP with me. I have published on the theory, practice and effectiveness of ISTDP in international, peer reviewed journals. Additionally, I have presented over 50 ISTDP training workshops (separate to my training programs) to mental health professionals in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Sweden, and Canada.

I practice Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), a valid and reliable psychotherapy that focuses on helping people recognise, understand and overcome their automatic patterns (thoughts, feelings and behaviours) of how they see and relate to themselves, others and the world in general. It is these automatic patterns that are resonsible for a large percentage of the psychological problems and disorders that people experience.

If you would like more information on my practice, or would like to organise a time for us to meet, please send me an email via the link at the bottom of this page.

Initial Evaluation Session

The first session with me is an extended session of 2 hours duration. This initial, extended session enables us to quickly understand all aspects of your problems, determine whether ISTDP is appropriate for the treatment of your problems, and for us to begin to make progress towards the resolution of these problems.

Psychotherapy Sessions

If the Initial Evaluation Session indicates that we are likely to be able to be successful in working together, regular sessions, of 50 minutes duration, typically fortnightly, can be organized.

Block Therapy

Block therapy is available for people who aren’t able to attend treatment on a weekly/fortnightly basis. In block therapy, treatment is provided in “blocks”, where a number of 115-minute sessions may occur on the same day or in the same week (usually consecutive days), followed by a length of time (e.g., a few months) where no treatment is provided. Block treatment is typically undertaken by people from interstate or overseas.
